Contrary to what many visitors expect, in the Algarve different and sometimes very large and impressive trees are growing.

Cork Oak

The cork oaks are particularly striking and can be seen in large numbers. The trees are about 10 – 20 meters tall; their diameter is 50 – 90 centimeters.

Every 9 years, the cork oak is peeled between May and August. A tree produces 100 to 200 kg of cork during its lifetime.

Jacaranda

Jacaranda blossoms are blue-purple. The trees are originally from Central and South America. In the Algarve you can find them in parks, as avenues and in pedestrian areas, where they show their magnificent bloom for about 2 weeks in spring.
