Cakes, pastries and pies are offered in many different ways. They are often offered as a dessert after a good lunch. Almond cake (pictured above) is available in different variations. The recipes differ from place to place.

Tip: In Portugal, cakes are often baked with condensed milk; that is very tasty but also very “heavy”. Carbohydrates are therefore difficult to calculate, especially for diabetics.

Pastel de Nata

Pastel de Nata or Pastel de Belém are puff pastry tartlets filled with vanilla pudding. They are originally from the Lisbon district of Belém. In the Algarve they are often offered with a bica and taste best when they are lukewarm.
